Tattapani ("hot water") lies on the banks of the Sutlej about 50 km north of Shimla, where naturally hot sulphur springs rise beside the river. Pilgrims have bathed here for centuries, believing the water heals skin and joint ailments.
The construction of the Kol Dam downstream raised the river and submerged the original springs, so today the hot water is channelled to bathing areas and pools beside the temples and guesthouses. At only around 650–700 metres, Tattapani is much warmer than Shimla, which makes it a particularly pleasant winter outing.
Top things to do at Tattapani
Soak in the hot springs
Several bathing areas and hotel pools are fed by the spring water; some are free, some charge a small fee. Bring a towel and a change of clothes.
Visit the riverside temples
Temples beside the springs, including a Shiva shrine, draw pilgrims especially on Makar Sankranti in January, when a fair is held.
Try river rafting
In the right season, operators run gentle rafting trips on the Sutlej near Tattapani. Ask locally about current conditions and safety standards.
