The neo-Gothic tower of Christ Church in Shimla against a deep blue sky

Christ Church

The pale-yellow landmark on the Ridge

Christ Church, standing at the eastern end of the Ridge, is Shimla’s signature building and one of the oldest churches in northern India. It was built between 1844 and 1857 in a neo-Gothic style, its pale-yellow walls and square clock tower designed to recall an English parish church — a homesick touch in a town that the British called their summer capital.

Inside, the church is lit by a series of stained-glass windows representing Christian virtues such as faith, hope and charity, and its walls are lined with brass memorial plaques to officials, soldiers and families of the Raj. It is still an active Anglican (Church of North India) church, and Sunday services are held.

Top things to do at Christ Church

Look at the stained glass

Step inside to see the stained-glass windows and the memorial tablets that read like a history of British Simla. The interior is quiet and cool even when the Ridge is crowded; photography rules are posted at the door.

Photograph it in snow or at night

The classic image of Shimla is Christ Church with snow on the Ridge. Even without snow, the church is floodlit in the evening and looks beautiful against a dark sky.

Continue to Lakkar Bazaar and Jakhoo

The lane beside the church leads to Lakkar Bazaar and the start of the steep path up to the Jakhoo Temple; the ropeway station is also close by.

How to get to Christ Church

  • Location: at the eastern end of the Ridge, five minutes’ walk from Scandal Point.
  • Access: the Ridge is pedestrian-only — walk up from Cart Road by the lift or the steps, or along the Mall from the railway station.
  • With a guide: almost every Shimla city tour and heritage walk stops here.

Insider tips

  • Visiting hours are limited and change with services — the church is generally open during the day but may close at lunchtime; check at the gate.
  • Dress modestly and keep your voice down inside; it is a working place of worship.
  • The church is at its most photogenic in the soft morning light, before the Ridge fills up.
  • Christmas services and carols draw large crowds, and a white Christmas is never guaranteed — snow usually comes later in the winter.
