Where to Stay in Shimla

A heritage room near the Mall, or a resort in the deodar forest? Here is where to sleep.

You have two real choices in Shimla. Stay in town, near the Mall and the Ridge, and you can walk to everything — the price is noise and crowds in peak season. Stay out of town in the forest resorts of Mashobra, Kufri, Naldehra or Theog and you get quiet, views and fresh air, but you will need a car for every outing.

We do not print nightly rates: hotel prices in Shimla change dramatically between a summer weekend, the snow weeks around New Year and a quiet midweek night in the monsoon. Every card links out to Trip.com for live availability.

In town or out of town?

Base Good for Less good for Price range
Near the Mall and the Ridge Walking to the sights, restaurants, evening strolls, heritage atmosphere Peace and quiet in peak season; parking and car access Budget to luxury

How to choose

  • Two nights, first visit? Stay near the Mall so you can walk everywhere.
  • Three nights or more? Consider splitting: one or two in town, the rest in a forest resort.
  • Coming for snow? Kufri, Fagu or Narkanda get it more reliably than the town.
  • Driving yourself? Check parking carefully — many central hotels cannot be reached by car.

Booking tips

  • Prices rise sharply on summer weekends, during school holidays and from Christmas to New Year.
  • Ask whether the room has a real valley view — and whether it is up several flights of steps.
  • In winter, check that the room is heated; many older buildings are cold.
  • Monsoon deals can be excellent, but keep plans flexible in case of road closures.
