Why visit Shimla?

A Victorian town on a Himalayan ridge

For more than half a century the British ran India from Shimla every summer, and they left behind a town unlike any other: a neo-Gothic church, a Jacobethan viceregal palace, a Victorian theatre and a car-free promenade strung along a ridge at 2,200 metres, with the snow peaks of the Himalaya on the horizon.

Add a UNESCO-listed narrow-gauge railway, Hanuman’s hilltop temple, deodar forests, apple orchards, and easy day trips to snow at Kufri and Narkanda, a maharaja’s palace at Chail and hot springs at Tattapani, and you have North India’s classic hill station. This guide shows you how to see it well — and when to avoid the crowds.

Frequently asked questions

Is Shimla worth visiting?

Yes — it is the most historic hill station in India, with remarkable colonial architecture, a UNESCO-listed mountain railway and superb forest and mountain scenery within an hour or two. Avoid peak weekends in May and June if you dislike crowds. See our sights guide.

How many days do I need in Shimla?

Two days cover the town — the Ridge, Mall, Christ Church, Jakhoo and the Viceregal Lodge. Three to four let you add Kufri, Mashobra, Chail or Narkanda. Our travel guide has sample itineraries.

When does it snow in Shimla?

Usually between late December and February, but snowfall in the town itself is unpredictable. Kufri and Narkanda, higher up, are more reliable. See best time to visit.

Is the toy train worth it?

For railway lovers and anyone with time, absolutely: five to six hours through tunnels, bridges and pine forest. If you are short of time, take a short ride from Shimla or a toy train tour.

How do I get to Shimla from Delhi?

By road it is about 340–360 km (7–9 hours). The classic route is the Kalka Shatabdi train to Kalka and then the toy train or a taxi. See getting to Shimla.
