A short drive north-east of Shimla, Mashobra feels a world away from the Mall. At about 2,100–2,300 metres, it is a scatter of village houses, apple orchards and dense deodar and oak forest along a ridge, with sweeping views over the valleys.
Mashobra has long been a retreat for the powerful: the President of India’s summer residence, The Retreat, is here, and nearby at Chharabra stands Wildflower Hall, once Lord Kitchener’s home and now one of India’s best-known mountain resorts. For ordinary visitors it is simply a lovely place for forest walks, orchard views and quiet nights.
