The stone and half-timbered Gaiety Theatre building on the Mall in Shimla

Gaiety Theatre

A Victorian playhouse on the Mall

Tucked into the Town Hall complex on the Mall, the Gaiety Theatre opened in 1887 and is one of the very few Victorian theatres still working in Asia. For the officers and families of British Simla it was the social centre of the summer season, and amateur dramatics here were taken very seriously.

After a long restoration the complex reopened in the late 2000s as the Gaiety Heritage Cultural Complex, with the restored horseshoe-shaped auditorium, an art gallery and exhibition rooms. Plays, concerts and cultural events are staged regularly, and short guided visits are usually available when the hall is not in use.

Top things to do at Gaiety Theatre

Take a look inside

Ask at the entrance about a visit to the auditorium — the balconies, the painted ceiling and the tiny stage are a delight. Small visitor fees apply.

See a show

Check the notices outside for plays and cultural programmes, especially during the summer season and festivals. Watching a performance here is a rare chance to use a historic theatre as it was meant to be used.

Visit the gallery

The complex has exhibition spaces that host art and photography shows, often by Himachali artists.
